Dance
Toddler Time (ages 22 to 36 months)
IT IS TODDLER TIME...Main Stage Center for the Arts has designed an interactive program to introduce the 2 year old to music and dance. Pre-dance steps, musicality, favorite songs, finger puppets, and basic tumbling are some of the activities for our littlest dancers. The class is 30 minutes in length. Cost is $342 for a full 10 months AND a tiny leotard, tights and ballet slippers! Class size is limited.
Pre-School Progressions (ages 3 and 4)
We offer an exciting program for preschool children. The program consists of three genres of pre-dance set in three semesters. These classes are 30 minutes in length.
- Pre-school Rhythm - Sept-Dec begins the child's dance education with stretches, exercises for gross motor skills (gallops, skips, hops), nursery rhymes, and pre-ballet steps such as plie, releve, tendu, and feet and arm positions.
- Pre-school Tumbling - Jan-Mar teaches physical coordination, strength, and flexibility with forward rolls, handstands, and other pre-gymnastic movements.
For the 4 year olds, this session will be Pre-school Jazz with beginning technique and basic jazz steps, all of which equals energized fun.
- Pre-school Tap - Apr-Jun teaches beginning tap steps, rhythm, and musicality.
Kinder Dance (ages 5 to 8)
These classes are for children ages 5 to 8. Children must be 5 yrs. old by September 1st to participate. Kinder classes progress in difficulty over three years. Most Kinder classes are 45 minutes in length.
- Kinderballet - teaches primary barre exercises, center floor work, basic ballet steps, terminology and theory required to advance into our graded classes.
- Kindertap - students learn basic fundamentals, counting music, rhythms, and terminology.
- Kinderjazz - is an energizing class preparing students with correct technique, stretching and strength, while utilizing all forms of jazz such as stylized and funk. Ballet is highly recommended with all jazz classes.
Beginning Dance (ages 9 to 14)
These classes are for students 9 to 14 with little or no previous dance experience. Instructors will teach basic steps and theory at a faster rate than Kinder classes. All Beginning classes are 1 hour in length.
- Beginning Ballet - students learn theory and terminology, stretching, barre excercises, center floor work, adage, and allegro geared toward the Cecchetti Method.
- Beginning Tap - teaches students strengthening and warm up exercises, rhythms, musicality, and terminology.
- Beginning Jazz - starts with warming up all areas of the body, stretching, basic jazz steps, jumps, turns, and covers all styles of jazz, including lyrical, stylized, and funk. Ballet is highly recommended with all jazz classes.
Cecchetti Ballet
A method developed by Maestro Enrico Cecchetti, that is recognized and utilized all over the world. Students must execute steps using proper technique consistently and be knowledgeable in theory and terminology in order to pass an exam. Ms. Papovich holds the Diploma of this method an honor which few have achieved.
- Beginning Grade I - for children with at least 3 years of ballet training. This class teaches the theories and improves the technique needed to train for Cecchetti examinations. This class is 1 hour in length.
- Grade I - students train to be examined in the Grade I syllabus. Students must pass this exam and be at least 10 years old to obtain their pointe shoes.
- Grades II-VII - students further their education in the Cecchetti Method by learning more advanced technique, combinations, and terminology. Students are required to attend a minimum of 2 ballet classes per week. These classes are 1 hour in 30 minutes in length.
- Pointe work is incorporated into Grades II and higher. Students must be at least 10 years old and have passed a Grade I exam. A teacher must accompany a student upon the purchase of their first pair of pointe shoes. The teacher keeps the pointe shoes until she feels it is safe for the student to wear them with out classroom supervision.
- Nonsyllabus - This class does not have a set syllabus as graded classes do. The students learn new combinations every week. This helps the student pick up combinations and choreography faster. The class is based on the Checchetti method, but incorporates other methods as well, all of which broadens their knowledge of ballet and its various styles. Students need to have previous ballet experience to attend. This class is 1 hour and 15 minutes
Tap
Grades III-IX - tap classes are based on the Al Gilbert Method as well as a wide range of other tap styles. Technique is increased with rhythm training, musicality, and improvisation. The syllabus progresses in difficulty with each level. These tap classes are 1 hour in length.
Jazz
Jazz I-IV - continuing training for Jazz students. These levels incorporate more choreography and higher technique. Set to today's hottest recording artists, jazz utilizes all forms such as stylized, funk, and lyrical. Ballet is highly recommended along with all Jazz classes. These classes are 1 hour in length.
Int/Adv Jazz - our highest levels of jazz training, taught by Ms. Ihns, specializing in style and choreography. Ballet is highly recommended along with all Jazz classes. This class is 1 hour and 30 minutes in length.
Special Classes
- All Boys Class - Guys Only! Covers all the dance styles for technique and fun.
- Leaps and Turns - teaches various leaps, jumps, pirouettes, and turns across the floor. Students must have at least 2 years of ballet or jazz training and continue their training in those subjects to participate in this class. This class is 1 hour in length. Highly recommended for all serious dancers.
- Stretch and Strengthen - enhances the flexibility, control, and power of the dancer by working separate muscle groups. This class is usually 1 hour in length. Highly recommended for all serious dancers.
- Pilates - fitness class designed for developing core strength in dancers. This class is 1 hour in length. Highly recommended for all serious dancers. Also available for adults on a per class basis.
- Hawaiian - authentic Hawaiian dancing with poi balls, bamboo sticks, and ipu's.
- Tahitian - must have previous Hawaiian experience.
- Polish - traditional character dance.
- Adult Combo Class - fun for all adults looking to learn basic dance steps and exercise at the same time. Class subject changes every 6 weeks. Curriculum includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hawaiian, Tahitian, Polish, and Hip Hop. This class is usually 1 hour in length.
